As Politicians Posture, Woman

As world leaders posture over peace in the Middle East, trading barbs and sound bites through the media, at least one former resident of Israel remembers the human toll of the conflict.

The progression of Ilana Haley's life from soldier to dancer to designer to teacher is no more unlikely than the simple fact that she survived her youth to live through it all. Haley uses her memories of living on a Kibbutz in Israel to tell stories of love and war in her book The Rocky Hill ( ). Her recollections span the earliest Kibbutz pioneers who built the nation of Israel, where she served in the army and later returned to earn a Master's degree in Hebrew Literature. Along the way, she was also a dancer in Tel Aviv in the Israeli Ballet and even came to the U.S. to study with a grant from the Martha Graham School of Dance, and later found further inspiration as a designer with a degree from the Chicago Art Institute.

Haley's stories focus not as much on the outer conflict of the war as they do on the inner conflict of those who are forced to live with the dubious spoils of that war. But not every story is tragic, and not every poem is sad. Her message is simple, that through the pain and the struggle, the yearning for love and joy doesn't go away.

"People who live in the midst of war do not put their lives and their loves on hold because they live in a world in which soldiers want to destroy what they are building," she added. "Does the fact that a mortar shell might level their home one day erase their need Omega Replica for love and family? Does the political reality of the Middle East conflict mean that everyone who lives in the region is so single-minded of purpose in that clash that they no longer want or feel joy? They are human beings, and their needs are the same as anyone else's. They are simply forced to work harder to fulfill them."

Ilana Haley takes her literary inspiration from an Israeli childhood -- as a child of early Kibbutz pioneers.

As the pound's power falls and

THE plunge in the spending power of the pound abroad, and the debt mountain facing several countries in the eurozone, has left Britons puzzled over where to holiday this summer.

This week two suppliers of foreign currency Stainless Steel Rings store gave their analysis of where the best value can be found. Many travellers only started planning trips after Germany knocked England out of the World Cup.

According to an analysis by ICE (International Currency Exchange), Croatia and Bulgaria are both "key hotspots" for summer.

Both offer better value against the pound than a year ago.

Joanna Williams, head of marketing at ICE, says: "The popularity of the eurozone is seeing a resurgence due to the strengthening pound against the euro - which saw a 19-month high this week.

"But Brits are also capitalising on favourable exchange rates, low day-to-day living costs and Mediterranean temperatures in non- euro hot spots Croatia and Bulgaria."

At the Post Office, head of travel money Sarah Munro says: "Football fans looking to escape World Cup woes will get the best deal by heading off to a Balkan beach resort.

"There, sterling will stretch further - and none of the region's soccer nations remain in contention."

The Post Office also identifies Bulgaria, Croatia - and the embattled eurozone - as the only places where the UK pound buys more foreign currency than a year ago.

"English soccer supporters will score an own goal if they fail to consider a holiday in the eurozone, where prices can be up to 43% lower than a year ago", the Post Office says.

All this, of course, assumes the crisis in the eurozone is contained for the rest of this year - and way beyond.

Not everyone is sure this will be achieved. Political commentator Peter Oborne argued the other day in the Daily Mail that Greece and Portugal will "inevitably" quit the euro at some point. This possibility, he thinks, heightens the risk of accepting euro notes with serial numbers prefixed with the letters Y (coming from Greece) or M (Portugal).

"In these extreme circumstances, the euros issued by these two countries might be converted back to drachmas and escudos - leaving the value of them in jeopardy", he writes.

"Of course, under European Central Bank rolex fake rules, the value of this money ought to be fully protected, but who knows what will happen if there was a major crisis?" He says that he will steer clear of notes with serial numbers G (Cyprus), S (Italy), V (Spain), T (Ireland) and F (Malta).

'Safe' euro notes, in Mr Oborne's view, are prefixed Z (Belgium), U (France), I (Finland), and H (Slovenia).

And we can, he says, have "total confidence" in notes with serial numbers beginning with X (Germany), P (The Netherlands) and N (Austria).

Could millions of Britons face fresh humiliation at the hands of the Germans, leaders of the fight for the euro? Although 16 of 27 EU member states have so far replaced their currencies with the euro, doubts about its long-term viability have intensified this year.

Growing fears that some member countries could default on their debts helped to push London's FTSE 100 index of leading shares below 5000 this week - around 15% down on its mid-April peak of 5833. That could be costly for someone about t

It's also a romp through the 19th and 20th centuries which, it is claimed, sweeps its audience along on a stream of brilliant one- liners, waspish wit and Wagnerian music.

Don't know about Wagner being that wonderful (once described as music to invade Poland to) but the play does have its share of humpbacked princesses, Texan redneck preachers, operatic splendour, crystal swans and a shotgun wedding.

Which can't be a bad thing at all.

"In the case of India, the strong rebound in the numbers of high net-worth individuals is highly correlated to the strong recovery in stock market prices and strong outlook for India's underlying economy," said Pradeep Dokania, chairman, Merrill Lynch Global Wealth Management, India.

Strong government stimulus and a revival in consumer sentiment as a result of which industrial output rose by 10.4% also helped drive GDP growth by 7.4% last fiscal.

The stock markets proffered more than 100% returns in 2009 following a 64.1% decline in 2008.

The Merrill Lynch-Capgemini study reveals the risk appetite, which took a beating post 2007, has started to return among the rich. "The fear which was there in 2008 has gone but the investors still remain cautious. The cash levels are coming down and the investors are again going back to equities and fixed income instruments" said Dokania.

The study, which was conducted using data from IMF, World tiffany heart pendant Bank and other government sources, covered 71 countries that constitute 98% of the world GDP. It showed the population of dollar millionaires world over rose back to 10 million in 2009 and their combined finanical wealth jumped 18.90% to $39 trillion.

The millionaires remain highly concetrated in the US, Japan and Germany, which together account for 53.5% of them. As risk appetite among the rich rises, money allocated by the rich to buy stocks will also increase, said Atul Singh, head of wealth management at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management India.

"We expect the proportion of asset allocation towards equity to increase to 35% by 2011 and cash levels to drop further to 13%. The global investors also seem to be looking for diversification outside their home countries to avoid risks. They are looking for predictable returns by investing in simpler products," Singh said.

India expected to return to st

NEW DELHI: India Asia's third largest economy, is poised to return to its strong pre-crisis growth thanks to its domestic demand, said an economist.

However, HDFC Bank chief economist Abheek Barua said the sovereign debt crisis, a worrying housing market in the US and slower factory output in China could hurt corporate investment plans.

India has targeted an 8.5 per cent growth for 2011. In the fourth quarter ended March 31 2010, the economy bounced to an 8.6 per cent growth.

"The way I see it, with our domestic demand we can post growth of 8.5 per cent to 9 per cent. To cross 9 per cent growth (mark), we need to see improvements to the global scenario," he told visiting Malaysian journalists attending an "Experience India" programme.

HDFC Bank is India's second largest private bank.

He also does not expect inflationary pressures from recent fuel price hikes, expecting it to fall to 7-8 per cent for the year and reaching 5 per cent by March 2011.

The fastest growing economy in the world after China also rolled out a stimulus package that amounted to 3 per cent of its gross domestic product (GDP). This is small compared with China's 4.4 per cent or US's 4.8 per cent.

"Automotive sales saw a huge recovery initially driven by the stimulus package before a broad-based momentum kicked in."

There are also signs of investments gathering steam, added Barua, with signs of investment demand for capital goods showing a spectacular 72 per cent growth between September and April.

"Infrastructure will provide the fillip going forward to Tiffany Silver the cement and steel industries. Then there is the new technology in renewable energy apart from the agriculture sector which has been receiving a lot of attention."

The finance sector has also become more sophisticated, with growth of new markets and a corporate bond market set to take off.

Kearns film revisits life in t

He now lives and works in Oxford, England, but it was Michael Kearns' childhood in Brandon that inspired him to create a film.

Home to visit family and attend Vincent Massey High School's 50th anniversary reunion, Kearns will be sharing his work entitled "Four Forty Four" during the event.

"This film grew partly out of walking around my old neighbourhood and thinking: 'There are so many memories here.' I started the project two and half or three years ago and by that time, I had already written several screenplays and knew how to put something together," he said. "So I thought: 'Why don't I? And shoot it and do the whole thing? I don't have to rely on anybody."

chanel Fake

That is how he approached the project, shooting footage during his annual, month-long visits.

The film, which Kearns narrates, takes the viewer from his parents' hometown of Treherne to 21st Street in Brandon, where he spent his first decade.

"It's all those young, childhood memories," he said. "I wanted to keep it quite simple."

After graduating from high school, he did not know which field he wanted to pursue.

At the age of 19, after having worked in the mines in Thompson for several months, he headed to Europe.

There, he met an Oxford professor, who took him under his wing and helped him along.

"I became friends with him and his family. He pointed me in the right direction and (subsequently) went to lectures in Oxford -- anything I could get into," Kearns said. "I started listening to Body Glove classical music (at that time) and I was hooked."

Enthralled by the sound of stringed instruments, he plunged into research that would lead him to his career.

The first foreigner to be enrolled in the prestigious violin-making school in Nottinghamshire, he became one of 12 students who are accepted each year.

Not only did he learn to make violins, Scarves violas and cellos, but also to restore antique instruments.

Afterward, he apprenticed in various studios before opening one with two partners in Oxford.

Along with filmmaking, his love of writing, painting and gardening fills some of his spare time.

"I enjoy having an idea and exploring it and seeing where it will take me," he said.

Screenings of "Four Forty Four" will be open to the public during the open house at Vincent Massey between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.

KEELEY-AND THE MEN IN HER LIFE

When Keeley Hawes thinks about it, she's more than qualified to star in a drama about identity theft. She once had her credit card cloned and used in a spending spree in Spain. On another occasion, a trusted former employee siphoned Pounds 7,000 out of the savings account that she shares with her husband, the actor Matthew Macfadyen. "All of it was spent at Tesco's, which quite impressed me in itself," she laughs. "How on earth do you do that?"

It's a typical tongue-in-cheek remark that Hawes is liable to make in interviews. In the wrong hands, it could make her seem posh or out of touch with the Tesco class. But to her credit, she continues to be wonderfully unguarded, perky and uncalculating in conversation - despite having had her fingers singed unmercifully during previous interviews.

"Sometimes you wish you'd had a tape recorder yourself on the table, just for your own sanity," she says when I meet her on the set of Identity, a new six-part ITV drama that kicks off tomorrow.

Cheap Nike Shox Turmoil Metaphorically speaking, then, fame - of which this beautiful actress has had quite a bit since starring in Tipping the Velvet, Spooks and Ashes to Ashes - is as capable of stealing and distorting one's true identity as any card cloner. "But the truth is that there are far bigger nightmares than being misrepresented in print. Ask Ed Whitmore, the writer of Identity."

During his research, Whitmore uncovered some horrifying real- life tales of identity theft crime. "In fact, the whole subject of identity theft seems so timely, it's a wonder that we managed to get in there first with this drama," says Hawes.

Fortunate, too, for ITV that it was able to secure Hawes, still riding high on her success as DI Alex "Bollyknickers" Drake in Ashes to Ashes. Identity is an intelligent, gripping drama with its finger very much on the pulse, but the actress might have balked at playing another copper. Hawes is DSI Martha Lawson, head of a unit formed to combat identity theft, and her team includes an enigmatic undercover cop, DI John Bloom, played by The Wire star Aidan Gillen.

"Every week it's a really strong story, which makes it totally different to Ashes - which was all about the characters," says Hawes. "It's different, too, in that there was always a bit of will- they-won't-they stuff between Gene Hunt and Drake in Ashes, whereas Bloom is in love with a woman from his Chloe Bags undercover life and Martha is married to the job. She's a career policewoman without a partner or kids."

How different, then, to Hawes who defines herself, first and foremost, as a wife and mother. She fell in love with Macfadyen on the set of Spooks. It was bad timing, she admits. After all, she was only eight weeks into her first marriage to cartoonist Spencer McCallum, with whom she had her first child, Myles, now nearly 10. She was five months' pregnant with Maggie, her five-year-old daughter by Macfadyen, when she married him at a register office with just two friends as witnesses. They have a third child, Ralph, aged three.

"I love being married to Matthew. And I know Matthew loves being married, too. It ties everything up and it's a statement to each other and to the world. Marriage and being a mother are absolutely crucial to my happiness and my life."

Hawes is one of four children and doesn't rule out another baby. "I thought, because I'd had three children, I wouldn't get the ticking clock thing. But actually, your body starts saying, 'Go on, have another one.' And Matthew is very keen. But

Labour yesterday claimed victory as a new pound(s)3.4 million fund to help buses go green was launched.

The Scottish Government's green bus fund will allow bus operators, councils and others to apply for funding to help with the cost of buying more environmentally friendly buses.

Transport Minister Puma Stewart Stevenson said the scheme would make an "important contribution" to cutting carbon emissions.

However, Labour claimed it had pushed the Government to establish the fund. Transport spokesman Charlie Gordon said: "Labour made the case for greener buses and I am pleased that the Government has listened."

Labour hopeful chooses city sc

LABOUR leadership hopeful David Miliband chose Bristol's flagship Redland Green School to make a keynote speech on education.

Mr Miliband was the Schools Minister who gave the go-ahead for the long-awaited comprehensive in north central Bristol seven years ago.

He was in the city yesterday to visit the Pounds 36 million building and meet staff and some of the students, aged ten to 15, as well as to speak to an invited audience of parents, teachers, Labour party members and students.

Mr Miliband told the Evening Post that Redland Green School had been a reflection of parent power and had "changed the game" in Bristol, meeting the legitimate demands of the local community for extra local provision and higher standards.

Brass Brooch

Its post-16 centre was attracting students from a wide area, he noted, while its inclusive education provision was enhanced by having Claremont School, for students with profound and multiple learning difficulties, on site.

Mr Miliband said Bristol had benefited from huge investment in schools under Labour, both in terms of new buildings and increases in the workforce.

He conceded that buildings alone would not address underachievement but said they provided a platform for people to make a difference.

But he warned: "People are right to be very worried that the big gains from schools like this are going to be under threat under the coalition Government."

Mr Miliband was also interviewed by Year 9 students Luke Stafford and Anna Murphy, both 14, for the school magazine.

The former Foreign Secretary visited classrooms and saw students making headgear for the St Paul's Carnival and designing an Olympic- themed logo as part of a week of replica tag heuer watches creative activities.

In his speech, Mr Miliband, who was welcomed to the school by head teacher Sarah Baker, outlined his "brazenly aspirational" vision for truly comprehensive education.

Speaking in the post-16 common room, with students watching from a balcony above, he said it was important in opposition to propose new ideas as well as to expose the faults of the Government and to oppose their policies.

The three key areas he highlighted were teachers, the curriculum and universities.

He said that ironing out inequality meant raising the floor level of achievement much higher than before and also raising the ceilings.

"We should be looking out to the new global gold standard not back to the old gold standard of the past," he said.

Mr Miliband said students spent too much time in exams and revising for exams rather than learning.

He said Mrs Baker had told him 60 out of 380 teaching days were lost in this way.

"The obstacle course of GCSE exams, AS exams and then A-level exams really is over-testing of a deadening variety," he said.

One of the biggest frustrations of his career, he revealed, was being moved from the Department for Education and Skills three weeks before the report on 14-19 qualifications by Mike Tomlinson - which was later rejected by the Prime Minister - was published.

"It was one area, sadly, where Tony Blair was not the moderniser."

On higher education, Mr Miliband said it was deeply disturb

On board with transit options

Saturday's groundbreaking for the Gold Line Foothill Extension Phase 2A marks a big advance in transportation for the Inland Valley, even though it will be several years before the trains get Replica Coach here.

Construction workers will extend the light-rail tracks from Sierra Madre Villa Avenue in east Pasadena over the Foothill Freeway to Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale, Azusa and right up to Glendora's edge at Citrus Avenue's foothill terminus.

Eventually the tracks will reach the Inland Valley. But the project will help local motorists long before it arrives here - anything that diverts some traffic from the 210 Freeway will give great relief to Inland Valley commuters.

Besides serving commuters and those on shopping and entertainment outings, the train will connect students to several colleges - Mt. Sierra College, Citrus College, Azusa Pacific University - upon completion in 2014 or earlier. The next construction phase will reach the University of La Verne.

The extension will give foothill residents a new option: Car or train?

The project is significant in many other ways that we've mentioned before, but are worth repeating: Phase 2A will create 7,000 new jobs and inject $1 billion into the local economy. That is a significant boost to a county with over 12percent unemployment, in particular to the ailing construction industry. Jobless construction workers from the Inland Valley will fill Gucci Fake some of those jobs.

Retail, real estate and office space will boom around the train stations. For example, Monrovia will restore its old rail station as part of its Station Square project, a 55-acre mixed-use development. Arcadia wants to add retail uses to its station just east of Santa Anita Avenue.

Fake Louis Vuitton Handbags

Montclair is planning a mixed-use "transit village" near its future Gold Line stop, which will connect the light-rail line to the many buses that stop at the transit center there.

The $800 million, 11.4-mile Phase 2A extension is the first project to be built using Measure R funds from the half-cent sales tax measure passed countywide. It's good to see the eastern part of the county getting such an important project, for which much credit goes to the Southern California congressional delegation that pushed for it.

Any time the first part of a project is under way, it helps speed along funding for the next phase. We're hoping the momentum will carry over into funding efforts in Washington for Phase 2b to Montclair and even to L.A./Ontario International Airport.

More trains and transit-oriented growth. Less automobile use. Less traffic and cleaner air. That's a change we can celebrate.

Flowing locks are back for men

When it comes to hair, more men seem to be taking the long way.

Replica watches

"There's definitely a trend," says Pittsburgh salon magnate Philip Pelusi, who splits his time between his salons in Pittsburgh and New York. "We're not talking '60s long. We're talking 2 inches at the most in the back. The idea is that it's fuller, more free- form. The idea is that you don't want to look like you worked too hard to get it."

The look can be romantic, rakish or rock 'n' roll. Or it can look downright angelic, like the style worn by Matthew Gray Gubler, who plays an FBI profiler in the CBS series "Criminal Minds." Other long styles include the tousled "surfer dude" look or the strategically moused burning bush 'do sported by "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson.

But, before they go long, guys should take a time out and consider whether it looks good. It's not for everybody, stylists caution.

"If the hair line is receding too much, we don't recommend it," Pelusi says.

Longer hair also requires more care. Prepare to devote extra time to mousing and blow-drying.

Izzazu International Salon, Downtown, recently introduced the Shag Redux, an updated iteration of the cut made famous by Jane Fonda and Keith Richards in the '70s.

"It's sort of the metrosexual look," says Izzazu education director and stylist Arnold Zegarelli. "The woman looks more feminine, Replica watches and the guy looks really hot."

Guys who may be thinking about growing their hair longer should consider their lifestyle, Zegarelli says. Izzazu clients who have long hair include artists, musicians and college professors.

"It's sort of an attitude you carry off," he says.

Very short hair is actually tougher to wear, because it accentuates the face, Zegarelli says. Therefore, a longer hairstyle may be just the ticket for a guy with an obviously round or narrow face.

"It can cover a multitude of sins," Zegarelli says. "Say a guy has irregular features. Long hair can be flattering. It can soften the face, yet it still has an air of masculinity."

When it comes to long hair, a guy with an obviously round face should wear his hair short on the top, so it can be kept off the forehead, Zegarelli says. But a guy with a narrow face would probably go for more hair on the front, because it makes his face look fuller.

John Graf, director of operations for the Priory, an historic European-style hotel on the North Side, began to grow his hair longer in 2002 after he quit his job as a commercial litigation attorney to work in the family hotel business.

"It made me more recognizable," he says. "People were remembering me quite a bit more. I kind of just left it as a little bit of a trademark."

The first time a friend saw him in a suit with his longer hair style, he told Graf he looked like John Travolta in "Pulp Fiction."

"That wasn't the look I was going for," he jokes.

The extra time spent blow drying his hair each day is worth it, he says.

"The trick of it is, more or less have it one length, and keep the top layers layered back a little bit. You walk a thin line between having a nice long hairdo and having a mullet."
