Mohali: As fresh showers threw life out of gear in Mohali on Monday, the city municipal council (MC) was hoping that the problem of waterlogging did not surface and compounded problems for residents.

Even as monsoon rains brought respite from the sweltering heat, it left water standing on many area roads. Besides, garbage strewn all around produced an unbearable stench, adding to the woes of people.

Residents also complained that the foul-smelling water had entered into their houses and they had to use buckets to dispose it of.

Kulwant Singh Dhingra, a resident of Phase VII, said, "I was forced to call a fire tender to help me clear my house of water. Not only this, garbage floating on water has increased the problem. The carpet in our living room, besides wooden flooring and sofa sets were damaged due to rain water."

Jasjit Singh Boparai, a factory owner in Phase IX Industrial Area, said, "Water strewn with garbage streamed inside my factory and damaged goods worth Rs 60,000."

He said, "I had lodged a complaint with MC officials last year regarding accumulation of water. They told me that as my factory was located in a low-lying area, I needed to construct water-berms cheap abercrombie on my own to prevent water from entering the premises."

Public health department executive engineer Jagjit Singh Dhami claimed, "The sewerage system in city's southern sectors has been designed in such a way that excessive water is released into the adjoining areas of Mohali." He said, "The sewerage in Mohali is such that it is not equipped to handle such a massive volume of water and consequently, water-logging occurs causing inconvenience to residents and commuters. This has been my first experience of water-logging ever since I joined the department. I will write to Mohali MC as well as Chandigarh Municipal Corporation to suggest measures to counter the problem."
