Launderette burglars 'are just

BURGLARS left a launderette owner distraught after stealing Pounds 800 and charity boxes from the business.

The money was in a safe taken from a locked office at Buttercup Launderette in Church Street, Tewkesbury.

Owner Mags Thompson said cash was stolen from two of the washing machines, and two charity boxes were also taken.

She branded those who had taken the boxes as 'the lowest of the low' and said the theft would affect the business.

"We've just picked up after the floods and now I'm a week-and-a- half 's money behind again," she added.

Mags hopes the thieves will be caught because she believes they will have anti-burglar paint on them.

She said: "My husband daubed it around the windows at the back following a burglary here three years ago.

"Whoever has done this will be covered in a black tar-type substance."

It was found dumped in the nearby River Swilgate on Wednesday, minus the cash and cheques.

THE plunge in the spending power of the pound abroad, and the debt mountain facing several countries in the eurozone, has left Britons puzzled over where to holiday this summer.

According to an analysis by ICE (International Currency Exchange), Croatia and Bulgaria are both "key hotspots" for summer.

There's no dearth of fat cats in India. The number of millionaires in the country grew by more than 50% last year, the second-fastest in the Asia-Pacific region, compared to 2008, according to a study by Merrill Lynch Global Wealth Management and Capgemini.

Last year, India had 1,26,700 people with more than $1 million, or Rs4.6 crore, net worth, compared to 84,000 in 2008. That's about one in 10,000 given India's population of 120 crore. The number of millionaires had plunged in 2008 (from 1,23,000 in 2007) following the global meltdown.

Hong Kong was the fastest dollar-millionaire producer - people with more than a million doubled (104.4% to be exact) in the former British principality. The other nations that saw the rich getting richer fast were China and Brazil.

The number of millionaires in Asia rose to three million, matching Europe for the first time.

An analysis by DNA shows that the wealth of the top 10 billionaires in India grew by 70.3% during the calendar year 2009 - from Rs 3,55,205 crore to Rs 6,05,077 crore. Among them, Cuff Links Tiffany Mukesh Ambani's wealth grew by 75% to Rs1,66,556 crore.

The Merrill Lynch-Capgemini study reveals the risk appetite, which took a beating post 2007, has started to return among the rich. "The fear which was there in 2008 has gone but the investors still remain cautious. The cash levels are coming down and the investors are again going back to equities and fixed income instruments" said Dokania.

It showed the population of dollar millionaires world over rose back to 10 million in 2009 and their combined finanical wealth jumped 18.90% to $39 trillion.

The millionaires remain highly concetrated in the US, Japan and Germany, which together account for 53.5% of them. As risk appetite among the rich rises, money allocated by the rich to buy stocks will also increase, said Atul Singh, head of wealth management at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management India.

"We expect the proportion of asset allocation towards equity to increase to 35% by 2011 and cash levels to drop further to 13%. The global investors also seem to be looking for diversification outside their home countries to avoid risks. They are looking for predictable returns by investing in simpler products," Singh said.

NEW DELHI: India Asia's third largest economy, is poised to return to its strong pre-crisis growth thanks to its domestic demand, said an economist.

However, HDFC Bank chief economist Abheek Barua said the sovereign debt crisis, a worrying housing market in the US and slower factory output in China could hurt corporate investment plans.

India has targeted an 8.5 per cent growth for 2011. In the fourth quarter ended March 31 2010, the economy bounced to an 8.6 per cent growth.

"The way I see it, with our domestic demand we can post growth of 8.5 per cent to 9 per cent. To cross 9 per cent growth (mark), we need to see improvements to the global scenario," he told visiting Malaysian journalists attending an "Experience India" programme.

Kearns film revisits life in t

He now lives and works in Oxford, England, but it was Michael Kearns' childhood in Brandon that inspired him to create a film.

Home to visit family and attend Vincent Massey High School's 50th anniversary reunion, Kearns will be sharing his work entitled "Four Forty Four" during the event.

"This film grew partly out of walking around my old neighbourhood and thinking: 'There are so many memories here.' I started the project two and half or three years ago and by that time, I had already written several screenplays and knew how to put something together," he said. "So I thought: 'Why don't I? And shoot it and do the whole thing? I don't have to rely on anybody."

That is how he approached the project, shooting footage during his annual, month-long visits.

The film, which Kearns narrates, takes the viewer from his parents' hometown of Treherne to 21st Street in Brandon, where he spent his first decade.

"It's all those young, childhood memories," he said. "I wanted to keep it quite simple."

After graduating from high school, he did not know which field he wanted to pursue.

At the age of 19, after having worked in the mines in Thompson for several months, he headed to Europe.

There, he met an Oxford professor, who took him under his wing and helped him along.

"I became friends with him and his family. He pointed me in the right direction and (subsequently) went to lectures in Oxford -- anything I could get into," Kearns said. "I started listening to Body Glove classical music (at that time) and I was hooked."

Enthralled by the sound of stringed instruments, he plunged into research that would lead him to his career.

The first foreigner to be enrolled in the prestigious violin-making school in Nottinghamshire, he became one of 12 students who are accepted each year.

Not only did he learn to make violins, Scarves violas and cellos, but also to restore antique instruments.

Afterward, he apprenticed in various studios before opening one with two partners in Oxford.

Along with filmmaking, his love of writing, painting and gardening fills some of his spare time.

"I enjoy having an idea and exploring it and seeing where it will take me," he said.

Screenings of "Four Forty Four" will be open to the public during the open house at Vincent Massey between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.

When Keeley Hawes thinks about it, she's more than qualified to star in a drama about identity theft. She once had her credit card cloned and used in a spending spree in Spain. On another occasion, a trusted former employee siphoned Pounds 7,000 out of the savings account that she shares with her husband, the actor Matthew Macfadyen. "All of it was spent at Tesco's, which quite impressed me in itself," she laughs. "How on earth do you do that?"

It's a typical tongue-in-cheek remark that Hawes is liable to make in interviews. In the wrong hands, it could make her seem posh or out of touch with the Tesco class. But to her credit, she continues to be wonderfully unguarded, perky and uncalculating in conversation - despite having had her fingers singed unmercifully during previous interviews.

"Sometimes you wish you'd had a tape recorder yourself on the table, just for your own sanity," she says when I meet her on the set of Identity, a new six-part ITV drama that kicks off tomorrow.

Fortunate, too, for ITV that it was able to secure Hawes, still riding high on her success as DI Alex "Bollyknickers" Drake in Ashes to Ashes. Identity is an intelligent, gripping drama with its finger very much on the pulse, but the actress might have balked at playing another copper. Hawes is DSI Martha Lawson, head of a unit formed to combat identity theft, and her team includes an enigmatic undercover cop, DI John Bloom, played by The Wire star Aidan Gillen.

"Every week it's a really strong story, which makes it totally different to Ashes - which was all about the characters," says Hawes. "It's different, too, in that there was always a bit of will- they-won't-they stuff between Gene Hunt and Drake in Ashes, whereas Bloom is in love with a woman from his Chloe Bags undercover life and Martha is married to the job. She's a career policewoman without a partner or kids."

How different, then, to Hawes who defines herself, first and foremost, as a wife and mother. She fell in love with Macfadyen on the set of Spooks. It was bad timing, she admits. After all, she was only eight weeks into her first marriage to cartoonist Spencer McCallum, with whom she had her first child, Myles, now nearly 10. She was five months' pregnant with Maggie, her five-year-old daughter by Macfadyen, when she married him at a register office with just two friends as witnesses. They have a third child, Ralph, aged three.

"I love being married to Matthew. And I know Matthew loves being married, too. It ties everything up and it's a statement to each other and to the world. Marriage and being a mother are absolutely crucial to my happiness and my life."

Hawes is one of four children and doesn't rule out another baby. "I thought, because I'd had three children, I wouldn't get the ticking clock thing. But actually, your body starts saying, 'Go on, have another one.' And Matthew is very keen. But

LABOUR leadership hopeful David Miliband chose Bristol's flagship Redland Green School to make a keynote speech on education.

Mr Miliband was the Schools Minister who gave the go-ahead for the long-awaited comprehensive in north central Bristol seven years ago.

He was in the city yesterday to visit the Pounds 36 million building and meet staff and some of the students, aged ten to 15, as well as to speak to an invited audience of parents, teachers, Labour party members and students.

Mr Miliband told the Evening Post that Redland Green School had been a reflection of parent power and had "changed the game" in Bristol, meeting the legitimate demands of the local community for extra local provision and higher standards.

Its post-16 centre was attracting students from a wide area, he noted, while its inclusive education provision was enhanced by having Claremont School, for students with profound and multiple learning difficulties, on site.

Mr Miliband said Bristol had benefited from huge investment in schools under Labour, both in terms of new buildings and increases in the workforce.

He conceded that buildings alone would not address underachievement but said they provided a platform for people to make a difference.

But he warned: "People are right to be very worried that the big gains from schools like this are going to be under threat under the coalition Government."

Mr Miliband was also interviewed by Year 9 students Luke Stafford and Anna Murphy, both 14, for the school magazine.

The former Foreign Secretary visited classrooms and saw students making headgear for the St Paul's Carnival and designing an Olympic- themed logo as part of a week of replica tag heuer watches creative activities.

In his speech, Mr Miliband, who was welcomed to the school by head teacher Sarah Baker, outlined his "brazenly aspirational" vision for truly comprehensive education.

One of the biggest frustrations of his career, he revealed, was being moved from the Department for Education and Skills three weeks before the report on 14-19 qualifications by Mike Tomlinson - which was later rejected by the Prime Minister - was published.

"It was one area, sadly, where Tony Blair was not the moderniser."

Construction workers will extend the light-rail tracks from Sierra Madre Villa Avenue in east Pasadena over the Foothill Freeway to Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale, Azusa and right up to Glendora's edge at Citrus Avenue's foothill terminus.

Eventually the tracks will reach the Inland Valley. But the project will help local motorists long before it arrives here - anything that diverts some traffic from the 210 Freeway will give great relief to Inland Valley commuters.

Besides serving commuters and those on shopping and entertainment outings, the train will connect students to several colleges - Mt. Sierra College, Citrus College, Azusa Pacific University - upon completion in 2014 or earlier. The next construction phase will reach the University of La Verne.

The project is significant in many other ways that we've mentioned before, but are worth repeating: Phase 2A will create 7,000 new jobs and inject $1 billion into the local economy. That is a significant boost to a county with over 12percent unemployment, in particular to the ailing construction industry. When it comes to hair, more men seem to be taking the long way.

The first time a friend saw him in a suit with his longer hair style, he told Graf he looked like John Travolta in "Pulp Fiction."

A defense division of Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB) has developed a new weapon simulator that replicates the characteristics of a Gatling-style gun, firing up to 3,000 rounds a minute. The Cubic division recently received a total of $5 million in contracts to supply the M134D trainer and other training equipment to multiple locations in the United States.

Called the M134D Virtual Trainer, the simulator is modeled after the M134D Minigun, a six-barrel electric-powered machine gun that fires 7.62mm rifle rounds. Its high-rate of fire -- up to 50 rounds per second -- makes the M134D exceptionally effective at suppressing hostile forces in a wide variety of combat situations. The same characteristic, however, also is a major drawback because training personnel to use the M134D with live rounds is incredibly expensive.
