Cubic Develops Rapid-Fire Weap

A defense division of Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB) has developed a new weapon simulator that replicates the characteristics of a Gatling-style gun, firing up to 3,000 rounds a minute. The Cubic division recently received a total of $5 million in contracts to supply the M134D trainer and other training equipment to multiple locations in the United States.

Called the M134D Virtual Trainer, the simulator is modeled after the M134D Minigun, a six-barrel electric-powered machine gun that fires 7.62mm rifle rounds. Its high-rate of fire -- up to 50 rounds per second -- makes the M134D exceptionally effective at suppressing hostile forces in a wide variety of combat situations. The same characteristic, however, also is a major drawback because training personnel to use the M134D with live rounds is incredibly expensive.

"You are talking a dollar a round, and you are shooting 3,000 rounds a minute," said Tony Padgett, Product Line Immersion Training Manager for the Cubic Simulation Systems Division in Orlando.

Cubic's trainer recreates the ballistics of an actual M134D in a virtual training environment as well as weapon sounds and other characteristics. Two of the simulators are scheduled to be delivered to Department of Energy facilities, where they will be used for facility protection and counterterrorism training along with Cubic's Warrior Skills Trainer (WST), a virtual vehicle trainer that uses high-fidelity graphics projected on large screens for training scenarios. A third M134D virtual trainer will go to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, as part of a mobile Cubic training system being used to train U.S. Army special forces units.

Cubic Corporation is the parent company of three major business segments: Defense Systems, Mission Support Services and Transportation Systems. Cubic Defense Systems is a leading provider of realistic combat training systems and defense electronics. Mission Support Services is a leading provider of training, operations, maintenance, technical and other support services. Cubic Transportation Mulberry Replica Handbags Systems is the world's leading provider of automated fare collection systems and services for public transit authorities. CTIA-The Wireless Association

CTIA-The Wireless Association President and CEO Steve Largent issued the following statement in response to the FCC's release of the 2008 Annual Mobile Wireless Competition Report in a release dated May 20:

"We believe the Commission missed an opportunity today to truly highlight one of the few glowing examples of investment, innovation and consumer choice in the U.S. economy. While we understand Cartier Watch that the Commission is not making any conclusion about the state of competition in the market, nor are they suggesting that the marketplace has changed to the detriment of consumers during 2008, we nonetheless are disappointed and confused as to why they've chosen not to make a finding of 'effective competition' for that year. The Chairman has committed to a fact based, data driven Commission. We have embraced that and placed numerous facts, in the record, about each element of the wireless ecosystem. We believe, based on the facts submitted, that a determination of effective competition in the wireless marketplace is not only inescapable, but is actually quite simple - ask any American. Whether based on HHI, the raw number of competitors in each market, investment, handset and network innovation, price or consumer choice, the U.S. wireless market is the envy of the world. That is why the lack of a finding is so troubling.

"In the same week that the European Commission releases its Digital Agenda for Europe, where they conclude that EU Information and Communications Technology research and development spending is 40 percent of the amount spent in the U.S., we believe that all policymakers should be celebrating, indeed applauding, the more than $44 billion that the wireless industry invested in networks and spectrum in 2008. That amount is significantly more than Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the U.K. invested - combined - in their wireless networks. We understand and appreciate that the Commission has evolved the Report to reflect the reality of a 'wireless ecosystem' that CTIA has championed; indeed, an ecosystem in which competition and innovation have accelerated in the 18 months since 2008. Going forward, we will continue to place facts on the record at the FCC about this incredible, effectively competitive, ecosystem that is available and exploding in the United States, from carriers, to infrastructure providers, to handset manufacturers and content, application and operating system developers.

"We are very concerned, however, about the potential misuse of 'policy levers' that are referenced in the Report and believe that any attempt to add regulation to wireless as a result of this Report would be both misguided and harmful to consumers. We hope - and expect - that in the future, the Chairman and Commissioners will take every opportunity not only to highlight Christian Dior Watches all of the good that is flowing to consumers and the U.S. economy from this industry, but also to make policy decisions based on this incredible fact-based record."

CTIA-The Wireless Association is an organization representing the wireless communications industry.

In the garden this week

ueen's Birthday Weekend will herald the arrival of the first of the new season's rose plants in many garden centres, but it also marks Arbor Day. Planting a tree will do more for the environment than planting a rose. If you can't tell a good variety of tree from a Wallet Replica cheap filler tree, then get some advice from somebody you trust.

If you buy bare-rooted roses (as opposed to ones in planter bags or pots), don't let their roots dry out at any stage. Plant them immediately, trimming any ragged or damaged roots. Roses are best in full sun with rich, friable soil. Plants will have had a quick prune before being dispatched from the nursery, but you usually need to follow up with a tidying prune after planting. We will bravely tackle rose pruning made simple in a few weeks' time in Outdoor Classroom.

The recent run of dreary wet weather has meant that our soils are pretty waterlogged. It is a good rule of thumb to avoid walking on garden beds where possible, but it's even more important when soils are wet. Many experienced vegetable gardeners keep a couple of long boards lying around. These can be handy to act as a Clip on charms straight edge for planting in rows, but their primary use is to walk on when soils are wet. The boards will disperse your weight and greatly reduce soil compaction. They should be used at all times in conditions with heavy soils, which does not generally apply in Taranaki - think the mud and clay of Auckland, Manawatu, or Dunedin and be grateful for our friable volcanic soils.

If you have areas where you often take a shortcut across a garden or have to stand in the same spot in order to weed, think about placing stepping stones or a paving slab to stand on to avoid continual compaction.

Lilies of most descriptions, rhodohypoxis and pleione orchids are all dying down now and can be lifted and divided if required. With pleiones, the large central bulb becomes mushy and black, Rotary Replica Watch never to appear again. It is the smaller, fresh green bulbs (called back bulbs) that will grow and flower.

Rocket much prefers cooler weather (it bolts straight to seed in summer) and makes a good winter crop in pots or a seed tray.

Bringing outdoor furniture in under cover for winter greatly extends its life expectancy. We know this from experience.
