O'Brien stars dominate Cartier

Byline: David Baxter

IN THE wake of Glorious Goodwood and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, Aidan O'Brien and the all-conquering Ballydoyle team lead five of the seven divisions of the 2008 Cartier Awards, writes David Baxter.

Halfway To Heaven now leads the three-year-old filly division on 78 points Hartford whalers after her win in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes, but French representatives Zarkava and Prix Rothschild winner Goldikova are breathing down her neck on 72 points.

The three-year-old colts' division is not as open, with Henrythenavigator's Sussex Stakes triumph cementing his position at the head of affairs on 136 points, 52 clear of Derby winner New Approach.

Yeats's second Goodwood Cup extended his lead in the stayers' division but he is only joint second in the older horse category, with the Henry Cecil-trained Phoenix Tower.

Both horses, on 64 points, trail Yeats's stablemate Duke Of Marmalade, who on the back of his King George victory is now well clear of the field on 152 points.

The awards will be presented on November 17 at a London ceremony, with winners decided on the basis of their Pattern-race performances, as well as the opinions of a panel of racing journalists, plus votes cast by Racing Post and Daily Telegraph readers.
