Flowing locks are back for men

When it comes to hair, more men seem to be taking the long way.

"There's definitely a trend," says Pittsburgh salon magnate Philip Pelusi, who splits his time between his salons in Pittsburgh and New York. "We're not talking '60s long. We're talking 2 inches at the most in the back. The idea is that it's fuller, more free- form. The idea is that you don't want to look like you worked too hard to get it."

The look can be romantic, rakish or rock 'n' roll. Or it can look downright angelic, like the style worn by Matthew Gray Gubler, who plays an FBI profiler in the CBS series "Criminal Minds." Other long styles include the tousled "surfer dude" look or the strategically moused burning bush 'do sported by "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson.

But, before they go long, guys should take a time out and consider whether it looks good. It's not for everybody, stylists caution.

"If the hair line is receding too much, we don't recommend it," Pelusi says.

Longer hair also requires more care. Prepare to devote extra time to mousing and blow-drying.

Izzazu International Salon, Downtown, recently introduced the Shag Redux, an updated iteration of the cut made famous by Jane Fonda and Keith Richards in the '70s.

"It's sort of the metrosexual look," says Izzazu education director and stylist Arnold Zegarelli. "The woman looks more feminine, Replica watches and the guy looks really hot."

Guys who may be thinking about growing their hair longer should consider their lifestyle, Zegarelli says. Izzazu clients who have long hair include artists, musicians and college professors.

"It's sort of an attitude you carry off," he says.

Very short hair is actually tougher to wear, because it accentuates the face, Zegarelli says. Therefore, a longer hairstyle may be just the ticket for a guy with an obviously round or narrow face.

"It can cover a multitude of sins," Zegarelli says. "Say a guy has irregular features. Long hair can be flattering. It can soften the face, yet it still has an air of masculinity."

When it comes to long hair, a guy with an obviously round face should wear his hair short on the top, so it can be kept off the forehead, Zegarelli says. But a guy with a narrow face would probably go for more hair on the front, because it makes his face look fuller.

John Graf, director of operations for the Priory, an historic European-style hotel on the North Side, began to grow his hair longer in 2002 after he quit his job as a commercial litigation attorney to work in the family hotel business.

"It made me more recognizable," he says. "People were remembering me quite a bit more. I kind of just left it as a little bit of a trademark."

The first time a friend saw him in a suit with his longer hair style, he told Graf he looked like John Travolta in "Pulp Fiction."

"That wasn't the look I was going for," he jokes.

The extra time spent blow drying his hair each day is worth it, he says.

"The trick of it is, more or less have it one length, and keep the top layers layered back a little bit. You walk a thin line between having a nice long hairdo and having a mullet."
