She said: "My husband daubed it around the windows at the back following a burglary here three years ago.

"Whoever has done this will be covered in a black tar-type substance."

She believes at least two people must have broken into the shop because Best Jacket Online it would have needed more than one person to carry away the safe.

It was found dumped in the nearby River Swilgate on Wednesday, minus the cash and cheques.

The safe has been wrecked, but Mags said she had been asked by police to hang on to it because they wanted to check it for evidence of the crime.

The theft of the two charity boxes, containing about Pounds 25 each, has particularly outraged her.

Her customers had been donating money to Macmillan Cancer Support and the Dogs Trust and she described the theft as "absolutely disgusting."

She added: "Macmillan helped care for my father before he died. They rely on donations, so when you get evil people taking their boxes, it makes it harder for them to care for people."

The theft happened overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday. Gloucestershire Constabulary is appealing for help from members of the public as it tries to trace the burglars.
