"The situation is still grim and no one can afford to wait for things to happen," he said. Prevx INTERNET security firm Prevx is going through a period of rapid growth. In the last six months it has had considerable success in the US. Managing director Mel Morris said: "Since the end of last year, 31 US banks have started using our technology in one form or another." The finance industry is very different in the US, with around 14,000 different banks so there is further potential for Prevx. Garrandale BUSINESS started to improve for engineering firm Garrandale in late 2009 after a difficult 12 months. Chief executive officer Malcolm Prentice said: "Prevailing economic conditions forced us to chase new business to good effect and our order book continues to improve at an accelerating rate." Rail work has grown over the last six months and the firm has a contract for the supply of controlled evacuation toilet tanks to Bombardier. "New markets and new products have helped to stimulate our business, our workforce have played a vital part and we will be better poised for the 2011 campaign." Managing director Bob Cawdell said: "Work picked up early this year then died down around election time but we still managed to sell products. Managing director Simon Wood said: "We have managed to secure business in 72 different countries over the last 12 months and we continue to compete for business on the world stage and market our country's capability overseas. "It's time to park the politics and support the activities where the UK can really add value to its recovery plan," he said. Node4 LAST year data storage firm Node4 opened a new centre and won Pounds 8.8m of new contracts. Managing director Andrew Gilbert said: "The new data centre is a quarter full and we are looking at a new site. "Headcount has increased by six and we now employ just under 40 people," he said. John Smedley AFTER a flat 2009, luxury knitwear manufacturer John Smedley is back into growth this year. Managing director Andrew Caughey said: "It has been an encouraging six months considering the uncertainty in the market and we are up about 10 per cent ." Growth is coming from export markets, new products have been introduced and the sales network expanded. Mr Caughey said: "We'll have a new distributor in China early next year and sales growth further afield will balance any decline in the Eurozone."
